अथ · Now
Let wonder become disciplined inquiry.
Brahma Sūtra 1.1.1
अथातो ब्रह्मजिज्ञासा · Brahma Sūtra 1.1.1
Move from first orientation to textual roots, darśana-level distinctions, and lived contemplation—without forcing Sanātana plurality into one formula.

A contemplative sequence
Depth is not information alone. Each movement changes what is noticed, what is questioned, and how insight returns to ordinary life.

Unity without flattening
Compare the same six relationships across traditions. Agreement is preserved where it exists; real metaphysical difference remains visible.

Primary doorways
Read each passage in its own literary and commentarial world. The trail below shows what a text contributes, where to enter, and what not to assume.
अथातो ब्रह्मजिज्ञासा
The threshold from ordinary knowing to inquiry into Brahman.
Read for: why inquiry begins, what readiness means, and what “therefore” gathers from prior discipline.
Do not assume: that every commentator explains atha and ataḥ identically.
सत्यं ज्ञानमनन्तं ब्रह्म
Truth, knowledge, limitlessness, the five sheaths, and the inquiry into ānanda.
Enter at: 2.1 for Brahman and emanation; 2.7–9 for being, rasa, fearlessness, and graduated bliss.
Do not assume: that ānanda here means an ordinary passing pleasure.
तत्त्वमसि
Uddālaka repeatedly guides Śvetaketu from visible forms toward subtle essence.
Follow: clay and forms, seed and unseen essence, salt dissolved in water, then the repeated teaching.
Do not assume: that the identity statement receives one uncontested Vedāntic reading.
नेति नेति
Apophatic discernment refuses to imprison the limitless within a finite predicate.
Read with: the preceding discussion of formed and formless, mortal and immortal.
Do not assume: that negation means nonexistence or spiritual emptiness.
परास्य शक्तिर्विविधैव
Rudra, the Supreme, knowledge, devotion, and manifold divine power meet.
Enter at: chapter 3 for Rudra’s sovereignty; 6.8 for the language of intrinsic powers.
Do not assume: that later Śaiva, Vedāntic, and Śākta systems use every term in the same way.
नारायण · विष्णु
Nārāyaṇa as cosmic source, indwelling presence, refuge, and Supreme Person.
Read alongside: Bhagavad Gītā 7–12 and each Vaiṣṇava lineage’s own foundational commentaries.
Do not assume: one universal hierarchy among Viṣṇu, Nārāyaṇa, Kṛṣṇa, and their manifestations.
विभूति · विश्वरूप
Recognition of divine glories becomes revelation of the universal form.
Track: 10.8, 10.20, 10.41–42; then 11.8, 11.12–13, 11.32, and 11.45–46.
Do not omit: Arjuna’s awe, fear, surrender, and return to a relational form of the Divine.
देवी · महामाया · योगनिद्रा
Devī as Yoga Nidrā, Mahāmāyā, protection, consciousness, and power within beings.
Enter at: chapter 1 for the cosmic sleep narrative; chapter 5 for the recurrent “Yā Devī” litany.
Do not reduce: Devī to impersonal energy when the text praises her as sovereign and worshipful.
लोक · कल्प · काल
Layered worlds, cyclical time, emanation, preservation, dissolution, and renewed manifestation.
Compare: Viṣṇu, Bhāgavata, Mārkaṇḍeya, and Śiva-oriented accounts rather than making one composite diagram.
Do not collapse: cosmological, ritual, symbolic, and contemplative readings into one exclusive register.
Notice speaker, setting, metaphor, sequence, and the problem being answered.
Let a lineage show how grammar, reasoning, and inherited interpretation work together.
Name genuine agreements and disagreements without turning either into caricature.
Ask how the teaching alters attention, devotion, conduct, and the sense of self.
यतो वाचो निवर्तन्ते अप्राप्य मनसा सह
Concepts orient. Texts discipline. Darśanas clarify. Contemplation makes the inquiry personal. Grace, teachers, and lived transformation carry it further.
